Hugo’s, one of the Portland restaurant scene mainstays, closed in late March to completely renovate its interior as well as its menu. They reopened quietly over the weekend and are now accepting reservations (this week by phone, after July 8th on OpenTable).

Highlights of the new space, detailed in a press release, include a large wooden bar that overlooks the open kitchen, tables made from a 160-year-old red birch recovered from the bottom of Moosehead Lake and a new menu that focuses on “local meats, seafood and foraged goods.”

Last year, the renown restaurant changed ownership as James Beard Award winning chef Rob Evans sold the business to Andrew Taylor, Mike Wiley, Arlin Smith, all longtime employees. The trio also own and run Eventide Oyster Co. next door to Hugo’s.
